Abstract This paper discusses the issues and concerns relevant to Library Education and Service in India. Briefly, describes the background of library science education in India. Gives an overview of UGC's contributions in development of library education in India. States the present position of library science education and efforts made by the Government of India in appointing various library committees from time to time, and recently National Knowledge Commission (NKC), 2005 for providing guidance and directions to all types of libraries to achieve the national mission on libraries in India. Concludes with some possible suggestions for future library education in India in the changing society.
