Abstract Information explosion has necessitated the way to seek information in an increasing variety and diversity at different levels, frequency, volume and use. The use of information is so complex that there cannot be a single system to cope up with the task of effective retrieval without assessing their specific needs. This is applicable to every discipline such as social sciences, humanities and science and technology. The information use pattern by the academicians of Fashion Technology has been taken into consideration in this study. In India, education in fashion technology has been given due importance at the national level. The Ministry of Textiles, Government of India constituted a group of seven institutions exclusively for fashion technology related studies. Hence for this purpose, these seven centres of National Institute of Fashion Technology in India situated in different parts of India have been identified for this paper.
