Abstract

The present age of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has ushered in a tremendous transformation in almost every sphere of the lives of human beings in all the sectors including Library and Information Centers. Through the application of ICTs in libraries, it has derived the proficiency of providing optimal, efficient and effective services to the users, which in turn fulfills the fourth law of library science which is to save the precious time of the user. In a country like India, it is not practicable for researchers both financially and physically to travel from one part of the country to the other part and obtain the requisite theses or dissertation. An Electronic Theses & Dissertations (ETD) repository of national or international exposure is an instantaneous solution to the problem of acquiring electronic theses and dissertation from distant places. As a result, Shodhganga - a digital collection of electronic theses and dissertations - was established by the INFLIBNET Centre, an Inter-University Centre under the University Grants Commission (UGC), India. The purposes of the study are essentially to discover the top 10 Indian universities that have contributed the highest number of ETDs to Shodhganga: A reservoir of Indian theses and to examine the contribution of ETDs by the categories of universities in India to Shodhganga. Another objective of this study is to examine the position/rank of The University of Burdwan in terms of ETDs contribution to Shodhganga and examine contribution of the ETDs by the faculty & department-wise by the University of Burdwan to Shodhganga. The study is based on a quantitative analysis of data which has been taken from Shodhganga website i.e., https:// shodhganga.inflibnet.ac.in. The data has been analyzed through MS Excel worksheet and tables & figures have been prepared. It is observed that the University of Madras excels and takes up the topmost position which has contributed the highest number of theses 13582 (3.66 %), University of Calcutta has contributed 12871 (3.46%) theses stands in the 2nd position and Anna University has contributed 12038 (3.24%) with 3rd position. The University of Burdwan (BU) has contributed 2586 (0.69%) theses to Shodhganga and stands 34th position in terms of contribution of ETDs amongst all the contributing universities from India. Furthermore, it is observed that eleven (11) departments contributed more than 100 & below 300 ETDs. Nineteen (19) departments have contributed less than 100 ETDs whereas nine departments have yet to make their contributions of any ETDs to Shodhganga.
