Abstract

In the present day age of information explosion, publication deluge, advancement of Science and Technology, proper acquisition and organisation of grey literature for effective dissemination of information to the target audience is of vital importance particularly for technical and special libraries and information centres to an increasing degree, Libraries and Information Centres are becoming involved in the collection and organisation of grey literature. Such literature include scrap books, photographs, prints, postcards, maps, clippings, menus, programmes, Blue prints, posters, letters, Legal documents, designs, dissertations, bulletin and pamphlets etc. Not only the librarians are aware of the concept of ‘Grey Literatures’, but also the accessibility to such literature is considerably poor. This paper therefore, covers the definition and concept of the phrase 'Grey Literature' and its importance in the present day information world. It also discusses how such literature presents special problems in acquisition, cataloguing, housing and servicing. The authors have given few specimen of such literature in Annexure-A along with their usefulness.
